How Does An IV Set Precision Leak & Blockage Testing Machine Work?

Leak and blockage testing is an important quality-control step in IV infusion set manufacturing. An infusion set contains multiple components, including tubing, connectors, drip chambers, filters, and injection sites. Poor sealing, blocked fluid paths, or assembly defects can affect the performance and safety of the finished product. ISO 8536-4:2019 also specifies leakage and other physical requirements for single-use gravity-feed infusion sets.

What Does the Machine Test?

Smartell’s Precision Leak & Blockage Testing Machine is designed to automatically inspect IV infusion sets for leakage and blockage-related abnormalities after assembly.

The machine uses pneumatic sealing fixtures and automatic detection to test multiple infusion sets simultaneously. This allows manufacturers to perform consistent quality inspection while reducing dependence on manual testing.

Three-Station Working Process

The machine operates through three main stations:

Station 1 – Loading
Operators place the IV infusion sets onto the hanging rack. The fixture is designed to keep the products in a stable position for the following testing process.

Station 2 – Sealing and Testing
The infusion sets are inserted into the sealing clamps. Once properly positioned, the automatic testing cycle begins.
Eight infusion sets can be tested simultaneously, improving production efficiency.

Station 3 – Sorting
After testing, qualified and unqualified products are discharged separately. This allows operators to quickly identify NG products and prevents defective products from entering the next production process.

How Does Leak Testing Work?

A typical automated pressure-decay leak test follows several basic steps: sealing → pressurization → stabilization → pressure measurement → result evaluation. After the test volume is pressurized, the system monitors pressure changes during the test period. A pressure loss beyond the specified acceptance limit indicates a possible leak.

For IV infusion sets, the test fixture must seal the product reliably so that the testing system measures the product itself rather than leakage from the fixture. This makes the design of the sealing clamps and pneumatic circuit especially important.

The Smartell machine also focuses on blockage detection, helping identify abnormalities in the fluid path that may affect the performance of the infusion set.

Eight Sets per Cycle

One of the main advantages of the machine is its multi-product testing structure. Eight infusion sets are tested during each cycle, with two operators working from opposite sides of the machine. Each operator handles four sets per cycle.

The theoretical production capacity is approximately 1,000 sets per hour, while the designed qualification rate is above 99.99%, subject to actual product and process validation.

Control and Main Components

The machine uses a PLC-based control system with a touch-screen human-machine interface. The simplified interface makes operation and parameter management easier for production personnel.

Key components include:

Pneumatic cylinder

SMC

Solenoid valve

MINDMAN

Touch screen

XINJE

Proximity switch

AUTONICS

Main control

PLC + HMI

Product-contact material

Anodized aluminum alloy

The product-contacting parts and sealing clamps are made from anodized aluminum alloy. This provides good durability while helping reduce potential contamination sources in medical-device production environments.

Compact Design for Production Lines

The machine has a compact footprint of approximately 800 × 1,200 mm, with a main machine power requirement of 1 kW. It operates with clean compressed air at 0.5–0.7 MPa and weighs approximately 100 kg.

Its compact structure makes it suitable for integration into an IV infusion set production line and for use in medical-device cleanroom environments.

Conclusion

A reliable leak and blockage testing system provides an important quality-control step for IV infusion set manufacturing. By combining pneumatic sealing, automatic testing, PLC control, and separate OK/NG discharge, Smartell’s Precision Leak & Blockage Testing Machine is designed to provide efficient and repeatable inspection for high-volume production.

The machine can also be integrated with other IV infusion set manufacturing and assembly equipment to create a more complete automated production solution.
